M O N T E F O R T E

EIt is a fortified village of roman origin, it lies at the outlet of the green Val d'Alpone, which took its name from the Castle, built before the year 1000.
In 1810 Brognoligo and Costalunga were aggregated to Monteforte.
In the center of the village you find the neoclassic parish St. Major Maria church, built at the beginning of ninenteenth century. Indoors it keeps the precious canva of the "samaritana al pozzo" (Samaritan at the pit), a Girolamo dai Libri's masterpiece.
The characteristic bell tower of the church stands out for its long and thin form and it is called by the people of the village "el campanil imbriago". |

On the right of the church there is the Episcopal Palace, erected between 1453 and 1471, thanks to a Michele da Caravaggio's idea. Indoors there is an elegant cloister with a double open arcade, which encircles a pit.
Another noteworthy building is the Town hall, built during the Napoleonic domination in Italy, thanks to a Bartolomeo Giuliani's project.
Not far away from the center there is a district called "Contrada di Rubian", an antique village characterized by portals, little courtyards and paths dug in the rock. |

Out of the center of the village there is the antique st.Abate church, which was built upon the ruins of the Castle, of which all around you can see its ruins. Indoors there are some interesting frescos of the sixteenth century and a wooden Crucifix of the fifteenth century.
In the south part of the village you can find the Capuccini church, dedicated to St.Maria, it was erected during the fifteenth century, indoors you can see beautiful frescos of the thirteenth and of the fourteenth centuries.
Along the road between the Monteforte'center and
Sarmazza's district there is St.Croce church, of very ancient origin, as the remains of the original apse reveal. Indoors it keeps some frescos of the thirteenth and of the sixteenth centuries and a little stone statue of Madonna Addolorata, found in the neighbouring lands during the plowing works. |
